The United Arab Emirates dirham was introduced in 1973. It replaced the Qatar and Dubai riyal and the Bahraini dinar in Abu Dhabi.
The name of this currency, dirham, comes from the Greek word Drachmae, name of the Greek currency, being one of the most widely used currencies of all time.
In November 1997 the dirham was pegged to the US dollar, establishing a fix exchange rate of 1USD = 3.6725 dirhams which translates to approximately 1 dirham = 0.272294 dollar
Bank notes are currently available in denominations of 5 (brown), 10 (green), 20 (light blue), 50 (purple), 100 (pink), 200 (green/brown), 500 (navy blue) and 1000 (greenish blue) dirham. There were also bills for 1 dirham wich were replaced by the coin in 1982. And in 1983 the notes of 500 where introduced and in 1989 the ones for 200 dirhams and in 2000 the bills of 1000 dirhams where re introduced after they were discontinued in 1982. There are also coins for 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 fills and 1 dirham also, but only the ones for 25 and 50 fills with the 1 dirham coins are commonly used the other are rarely used. All these coins where introduced in 1973.
